Apple September Event 2019

It is that time again for Apple to announce its upcoming iPhone lineup. Leading up to the event there were plenty of leaks and rumours regarding the next-gen iPhone, here are the official announcements made from the Apple.

iPhone 11 Pro

The main headline announcement was the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. This follows the trend of Pro variants of other manufacturers.  This Pro version has improved OLED display which Apple is calling Super Retina XDR display. To be honest it is just a fancy way of saying they have a much higher resolution screen. Whether there is a big difference time will tell. One major selling point of the iPhone 11 Pro line-up is the inclusion of the triple-lens setup. The lens setup consists of one telephoto (52mm, f/2.0), one wide (26mm, f/1.8) and one super wide (13mm, f/2.4). When taking a shot the three lenses will take a shot simultaneously, allowing you to switch between the three modes after shooting the photo.  Other features include a low-light Night node and the ability to take slow-motion selfie videos with the front-facing camera. According to Apple, the battery life in the Pro has improved from its predecessors allowing users to have four more hours.

iPhone 11

The simple iPhone 11 variant is the more budget-friendly iPhone in the line-up. It comes with a 6.1-inch retina display and has a dual-lens camera setup with the telephoto lens missing in this variant when compared to this more expensive counterpart. Internally, the iPhone 11 has the same camera options as the more expensive counterpart. However, the iPhone 11 comes with six colour options and with improved battery life.

iWatch Series 5

The new Series 5 Apple Watch has a new battery claiming 18 hours per charge with improved health monitoring functions as well as an added addition of a compass function. Now the new Series 5 has an always-on display that dims instead of shutting off when you drop your arm. A new titanium model is available along with a larger collection of watchbands.

New iPads

The seventh-generation iPad was announced, the entry-level model now comes with a larger 10.2-inch inch retina display however the new iPads have a new 100-per cent recycled aluminium body and the new iPad’s will come with a fee year’s subscription to Apple TV.

Summary

This year’s Apple announcement has been predictable, probably due to leaks. There were not many surprises due to what other companies have been doing and eventually, Apple will follow suit with their refined version of the industrial trends. Now with the inclusion of the Pro lineup, Apple may find themselves providing too many options, which may cause their departments from focusing on innovation. The Pro line-up does not live up to the price tag and name, I feel the inclusion of the triple camera setup does warrant the Pro name. If the Pro version had high refresh screen rates, wireless share charging or USB-C charging enabling the user to do more with their device. At the moment the Pro version does not provide sufficient enough difference to part way with my own money for it. If you are upgrading from an older iPhone like the iPhone 8 then iPhone 11 will be a great choice however if photography is an interest, do consider the Pro line-up however to contemplate what you get for the extra price.
