Camera under display technology is here!!

The pursuit of a full bezel-less display is the number goal for smartphone manufacturers. Being the first to create a fully bezel-less smartphone without compromising on function will surely place the manufacturer ahead of the competition. The last obstacle standing in the way is the front-facing camera. Lately manufacturers such as One Plus have resorted to using pop up camera modules, however this practice isn’t suitable as it requires moving parts and most likely to malfunction. Consumers are tentative to purchase a pop camera module as this could malfunction or broken by an accidental drop.

The concept of an under display camera is a promising concept which could be true due to the development from Xiaomi, who have recently unveiled a video showing off their prototype of a fully functioning under display camera. The development in this key area shows the potential future of smartphone and display technology. This technology could be adapted to laptops, monitors, tablets, televisions and other products that use display technology. However, it also causes some privacy issues as manufacturers will be able to install the camera behind display technology without notifying the consumers which could lead to spying and intrusion of privacy. Even though the advancement in the technology/area is great, it poses a few privacy issues for consumers and manufacturers that governments will need to provide governance on in order to protect consumers and their rights to privacy.
