What is Web 3.0?

The emergence of the internet in 1989 has connected the world and allowed the exchange of information. Web 3.0 is the next version of the internet age. To understand what web 3.0 will bring, we need to understand how the internet got here in the first place.

Web 1.0 (1989 – 2005)

Web 1.0 is also called the Static Web. The first era of the web offered limited information with little or no user interaction. A search engine did not exist at the time so users found it difficult to find the correct information they are looking for.

Web 2.0 (2005 – Present)

Known as The Social Web or Web 2.0, advancements in web technologies like Javascript, HTML5, CSS3, etc have enabled companies to build interactive web platforms that can cater for a variety of devices. In the Web 2.0 era, this paved the way for social networks and user-generation content production to become popular.

Web 3.0 (Next Stage)

Web 3.0 will operate in a decentralised way that will be a huge leap forward as current data is stored centrally. To understand Web 3.0 we need to take a look at the key features of Web 3.0.

Semantic Web

The next evolution of the web will improve technologies to generate, share, and connect through content through search and analysis based on the ability to understand the meaning of words.

Ubiquity

Web 3.0 will be making the internet accessible to everyone anywhere at any time. Internet-connected devices will no longer be concentrated on computers and smartphones. The existence of IoT (Internet of Things) technology will bring a new generation of smart devices making accessing the internet easier.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

As AI technology continues to improve, it will have the capability to process language. Computers will be able to understand information like humans and will be able to provide faster results that are more relevant.

3D Graphics

Web 3.0 will see three-dimensional design being used extensively in websites and services such as museum guides, computer games, and eCommerce.

Summary

Web 3.0 will provide more personal and customised browsing experiences providing a smarter and more human-like search assistant. The decentralisation of Web 3.0 will empower individual users to become guardians of their data. Smart devices have already changed our behavioural patterns; the internet will become more integrated in our daily lives. Web 3.0 will see the blending of digital and physical reality.
