Iconic Smartphones By LG
LG has confirmed that they will exit the smartphone business to focus resources on areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence, and business-to-business solutions as we as platforms and services. LG has stated that existing phones will remain on sale and LG will continue to support the products for a period by providing software updates. LG says they expect to complete the business closure of the smartphone division by the end of July 2021. The closure has come due to huge financial losses over the past five years while compared to its fellow South Korean manufacturing rival Samsung continue to reap profits from their smartphones. The closure of the LG smartphone division will mean the teased LG rollable smartphone will never see the light of day.
LG, in the past, has experimented with mobile phone and smartphone designs to push boundaries.
Here are some notable phones LG has produced.
LG Crystal
The LG Crystal explores an alternative design with the use of a clear panel for touch controls for the number pad. The design looks like something from a sci-fi movie.
LG Optimus 3D
During 2011, 3D was a big craze especially 3D televisions and content but LG came out with LG Optimus 3D which was able to capture 3D content and display it on the screen without the need for glasses. Although this was only reserved for photos, videos, games and some UI elements. The craze of 3D downed down and so did the LG Optimus 3D.
LG Flex
LG entered the curved smartphone display market with LG Flex. This smartphone highlighted that LG has the flexible OLED panel technology to create curved and bendable displays. The LG Flex was important to LG to highlight the progress of its research and development division in OLED display technology.
LG G5 Modular Concept
LG introduced the modular smartphone concept through the introduction of the LG G5. The LG G5 was released with a range of accessories that were designed to expand the options offered by the smartphone itself. These accessories range from better cameras, bigger battery, 360-degree camera to ultra-wide cameras. The LG G5 was a great concept however it made some people question why some of the modular accessories were not included in the smartphone initially.
LG Wing
Introduced in late 2020, the LG Wing was a dual-screen smartphone and had a rotating front screen to enable the dual-screen capability to use two different apps at once. The problem with the phone is the thickness, weight, and the app capable of utilising the dual screens. The LG Wing was a way for LG to have a taste of the foldable/ dual screen market without the use of use flexible OLED display technology.
LG Rollable Smartphone
At CES 2021, LG unveiled their rollable smartphone the LG Rollable. Using flexible display technology from their rollable television, the display can adapt its size to the user’s need. Unfortunately due to the closure of LG’s smartphone division, we won’t be seeing the LG Rollable smartphone being released to the public.
