Large MicroLED Displays The Future In Filming?

Disney’s Star Wars series The Mandalorian had a huge budget to create the series, however, money was saved on building film sets by using large MicroLED displays to provide a reactive environment.

What are microLED displays?

MicroLEDs are traditional LEDs shrunk down to microscopic levels. These microLEDs can produce a picture brightness that rivals OLED but without the degrading aspect that OLED has. This means microLED displays will have a longer life than OLED displays.

How does microLED display benefit film production?

The producers of The Mandalorian used big microLED displays to create an enormous digital world allowing the actor to exist within a virtual world without the need for traditional green screens. Another benefit of using large microLED displays is that the light will reflect textures more naturally. When using a green screen, green hues are often around the actors and physical props, which requires a CGI artist to render the correct lighting effects which take time and money to edit. Using virtual scenery will help actors to deliver better dialogues and movement that best suit the environment. The use of microLED technology is an expensive investment at the start, however, it can save huge amounts of costs on travel to locations and building huge film sets on location.
