Motorola Razr 2019

Motorola has announced a refresh of the popular Motorola Razr. Anyone who has lived during the mid-’00s will remember the popularity of the Motorola Razr and flip phones back then. This latest reimagined Motorola Razr brings back the nostalgia with a modern twist and innovation.

Design

The Motorola Razr inherits the flip design of the predecessor. The thick bottom lip houses the fingerprint sensor and the mechanism that allows the screen to shrink and increase when closed or open. The bottom lip also houses the antennas, speakers and USB-C port. The phone is constructed with a metal back and glass cover on the front with a quick look display. However, the Razr doesn’t have a slot for expandable storage, 3.5mm headphone jack or SIM cards which the phone uses eSIMs.

Display

Following the trend of flexible screens, the Motorola Razr 2019 has used this latest innovation to allow the smartphone to fold into a clamshell, like its predecessor while maintaining a screen size appropriate for media consumption on the go. The Razr features a 6.2-inch screen OLED main display and a 2.7-inch external display.

Camera

The Razr 2019 has a single 16MP rear camera but no multi-camera setup like modern smartphones. There is also a 5MP front-facing camera on top of the screen when unfolded.

Performance

The Razr packs a Snapdragon 710 chipset which is slightly lower in terms of performance when compared to the Snapdragon 855. The phone runs on Android 9 which means it misses out on the advantages of Android 10. The Razr comes with a 2,510mAh battery and Motorola estimates that should be enough to last an entire day. The phone does come with a 15W TurboPower charger allowing you to charge the phone quickly.

Summary

The Motorola Razr 2019 brings back memories of the popular mid-00’s Motorola Razr inheriting the same distinctive design characteristics of its predecessors. The concept and implementation of flexible displays for flip phones is an interesting idea to break the conventional rectangular design. The price for this smartphone is £1,170 which is priced alongside manufacturer flagships from the companies like Google, Samsung and Apple. The design brings back the memories of the mid-00’s version. The new Razr is a push in the right direction for innovation however it does have its flaws like a poor secondary screen and a poor camera overall which may not appeal to everyday consumers. The Motorola Razr 2019 is a phone that shows hints of what the future could be and for Motorola to see and test their concept in the real world. It may take a few generations before the Razr 2019 will appeal to everyday consumers.
